Spain is surrounded by the sea on most sides; Northern Spain is landlocked to France, but a long stretch borders the Bay of Biscay. To the west Spain borders Portugal, but it also has a long shoreline towards the Atlantic Ocean. With such an extensive coastline, Spain has many cities located by the sea. Some of these cities are among the biggest and most important in Spain.
Barcelona in northeastern Spain is the second largest city in the country; it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. Further down the east coast is Valencia, Spain’s third largest city; among other things, Valencia is known for Las Fallas, which is a famous local festival held in March.
On the south coast of Spain is Malaga, the capital of Costa del Sol, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with miles of beautiful, sandy beaches, and lots of fashionable holiday resorts.
On the west coast, Cadiz is the most notable city; it is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Iberian Peninsula and possibly the oldest city in Western Europe. Bilbao is the largest city in Northern Spain; it is situated on the shores of the Bay of Biscay.
Also the Spanish islands host great cities: Palma on Majorca in the Mediterranean Sea is a city that has something to offer for almost everyone; good shopping, historical places and museums, nice restaurants and a lively nightlife. Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off Africa’s west coast, is the ninth largest city of Spain and probably the most cosmopolitan city in the Canary Islands.
